You may have heard me use this term or heard it in your child's math homework and wondered what it actually means.Place Value is all about understanding that the value of a digit changes, depending on its position in a number and it's distance from the decimal point.The digit 9 in 29 is worth 9 ones.The digit 9 in 5915 is worth 9 hundreds.The digit 9 in 5.9 is worth 9 tenths.Understanding Place Value also helps with learning that 900 is 10x bigger than 90 and that 0.9 is 10x smaller than 9 and this can then lead onto an unlimited amount of related facts.A solid understanding of Place Value is often underestimated but it really underpins knowing the properties of number and being able to solve more complex problems.
